Scientists develop lightweight and durable ceramic aerogels to protect future spacecraft

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles and partners in eight other research institutes have invented a new material. This lightweight aerogel is made of ceramic, which is very durable and can one day be used in some extreme conditions known to humans. For example, when returning to the Earth ’s atmosphere, it protects the spacecraft from atmospheric combustion. Ceramic aerogels have been used for such purposes in the past.

The research team said that the new aerogel they created was more durable than previous aerogels after being exposed to extreme heat and the extreme temperature changes seen during space missions. This material has a unique atomic composition and structure, making it unusually elastic.

When the material is heated, it shrinks instead of expanding like most ceramics. Another unique characteristic of this new material is that it shrinks perpendicular to the compression direction. Scientists say you can think of it as if a tennis ball moved inward instead of stretching out when pressed against the table. This makes the material more flexible and less brittle than existing ceramics. The material can be compressed to 5% of its original volume and fully recovered. In contrast, other aerogels can only be compressed to about 20% of their original volume and can still be recovered.

This material is made of a thin layer of boron nitride, which is a ceramic material with atoms connected in a hexagon. The research team said that after storing the material at 1400 degrees Celsius for a week, its mechanical strength lost less than 1%.
