U.S. scientists develop self-healing materials whose "veins" contain resin
If we are to solve the entire plastic waste problem, part of the solution may lie in repairing its own material when broken, so that it does not have to be discarded. With this in mind, many teams have been developing self-healing materials. Under the leadership of Professor Keivan Davami, a team at Lamar University in Texas began using liquid resin. This material will polymerize (harden) when exposed to ultraviolet light. Using a 3D printing technique called laser-assisted stereolithography, scientists were able to create simple objects in which most of the resin was exposed to ultraviolet light to solidify it, while small reservoirs of unexposed liquid resin were still trapped inside. As long as these objects remain intact, the liquid will be contained. However, if the polymer resin breaks, capillary action sucks out some liquid resin. Once quickly exposed to an artificial UV light source, the liquid resin will polymerize and seal the crack. This is similar to the way blood flows out and heals wounds when injured. Davami and colleagues are now further developing the technology, focusing on reducing the light energy required for polymerization. In the end, they want to see the material repair itself without human intervention, using the surrounding ultraviolet light sources, such as sunlight. Scientists hope that this material can eventually be used in tools, as well as spectacle frames, shoe soles and other items. The team recently published a paper on the study in the journal Science Report.
