Mary Anne White is a Chemical Researcher at Dalhousie University and a member of the Royal Canadian Society. Recently, her research team has a new discovery of elemental boron (B, the fifth element of the periodic table).

Dr. Mary Anne White
“Stabilized boron is a disordered structure, which is incredible. In nature, the normally ordered material is more stable,” White explains. “What’s even more incredible is that at very low temperatures, it’s logical to order the matter. The tendency is more pronounced, but the elemental boron also maintains a stable disordered structure."

In nature, boron does not exist as a simple substance, but as a compound such as boron nitride or boron carbide. Compared with all materials, the hardness of these two substances ranks second and third respectively, so the use of boron is very extensive in terms of strength and importance. Although diamond has the highest hardness, boron can withstand high temperatures, so the application of boron compounds also involves aerospace technology, bulletproof vests and knives.

"The results of this research have laid the foundation for our in-depth study of many materials in the future, and also enriched the basic theory relied on the development of industrial technology," White said. “All substances are made up of nearly 90 kinds of natural elements, of which about 30 are abundant. It is really gratifying to have a new discovery of an important element.”
