New method for verifying hydrogen embrittlement failure of fasteners

On January 28, 2015, the National Standards Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (hereinafter referred to as the “Center”) undertook the provincial quality supervision system research project “Research on the method of fasteners for hydrogen embrittlement detection and evaluation”. Firmware hydrogen embrittlement testing provides a new approach.
Hydrogen embrittlement is one of the most common failure modes of fastener products. Due to its sudden failure and high detection difficulty, hydrogen embrittlement has become a major hidden danger to the reliable service of high-strength fasteners. Based on the stress corrosion slow strain stretching method, combined with the parameters of hydrogen embrittlement criticality, fatigue life and elongation after fracture, the project has developed the “Methods for Rapid Assessment of Hydrogen Embrittlement Risk” and “Slow Stress Tensile Test for Risk of Hydrogen Embrittlement”. Two new methods are used to provide technical support for ensuring the quality of high-strength fasteners and preventing safety accidents caused by hydrogen embrittlement of fasteners. At the same time, the detection time can be significantly shortened and the detection efficiency can be improved.
