U.S. has developed a new type of military smart sensor that transmits faster and more energy-efficiently
According to the China National Defense Science and Technology Information Network, North Carolina State University of the United States claims that its latest research progress paves the way for the use of multi-functional spintronic smart sensors in military applications and the use of next-generation spintronic devices. Vanadium dioxide can integrate smarter sensors onto silicon chips and use lasers to make the material magnetic. At present, vanadium dioxide is used to manufacture infrared sensors. By integrating it into a silicon substrate as a single crystal, researchers may create infrared smart sensors in which sensors and computational functions are embedded on a single chip. North Carolina State University says this makes sensors faster and more energy efficient. Because it does not need to send data to another chip for processing. Since a separate chip is not necessary, the smart sensor is also lighter than conventional. For military applications, sensor technology needs to be able to sense, process, and respond quickly to data, and this research has achieved this goal. In addition, the researchers modified the VO2 with a high power nanosecond pulsed laser beam to make it magnetic. This will allow the creation of a spintronic smart sensor that combines an infrared sensor and a magnetic sensor on a single chip. Spintronics refers to technologies used in solid-state devices that exploit the inherent spin advantages of electrons and their associated magnetomotive force. The potential advantages of spintronics include higher memory capacity, faster data transfer, and higher computing power on a computer chip. The results of the study were published in Applied Physics Letters. (Hu Yanping)
