Rock wool development history

Cotton-like man-made glass fibers, such as rock wool and slag wool, have been widely used in the production of insulation, sound insulation and other products in Europe, North America and other regions for decades. During this period, people have been conducting a lot of in-depth research on whether the fibers released during manufacturing or dismantling are carcinogenic due to inhalation. Epidemiological studies published in the 15 years since the last International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) re-examined these fibers have suggested that there is no evidence to support an increase in lung cancer or occupational exposure during the production of these materials. The risk of a skin tumor (cancer on the inner wall of a cavity in a human body).

The same result for any other type of cancer. In addition, the industry has made a lot of efforts to develop new materials that give them the same thermal insulation and sound insulation properties as the old ones, but they can quickly disappear from human tissue. Asbestos is known to be a carcinogen, which causes mesothelioma and lung cancer. But it has been used as a thermal insulation material for decades. Asbestos decomposes particularly slowly, and it is also particularly slow to disappear from the body tissue it deposits. The high carcinogenic potential of asbestos fibers is related to properties known as high biodurability. The industry has done a lot of work on these conditions, and tests on new drugs for carcinogenicity, and found that the vast majority are not carcinogenic. Test animals develop tumors only under extremely harsh exposure conditions.

The Task Force has concluded that only materials with high biodegradability remain in substances that can be carcinogenic to humans in substances classified as Class 2B by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Such materials include durable ceramic fibers, which are used in the industry for insulation in high temperature environments such as cupolas, and also include special purpose glass wool that is not used as a thermal insulation material. On the contrary, the most widely used glassy fiber cotton includes insulating glass wool, rock wool and slag wool are now considered to be carcinogenic substances, belonging to three categories. Continuous glass fibers, which are mainly used to reinforce plastics, are also considered to be substances that are not carcinogenic to humans. However, such fibers still cause damage to the human respiratory system and skin, so the application of such products should be selected from industrial sites away from the crowd and appropriate sealing measures should be taken.

It is confirmed that all kinds of artificial glass fiber such as continuous glass fiber, rock (mineral) cotton and glass wool will not cause cancer, and solve one of the problems of long-term confusion of glass fiber and heat insulation and sound absorbing materials industry, and will actively promote the development industry of two industries.
